The Burnet High School girls basketball team announced which of its players received All-District 24-4A selections.
Named to the first team was senior Wrigley Mulhollan, while sophomore Maycee Floyd was named to the second team, and senior Peyton Allen and Sarah Cullison and freshman Rowyn Mulhollan were honorable mention.
Wrigley Mulhollan had the attention of opposing teams throughout the season so it was no surprise, not even to her own head coach, Kim Payten, that she was selected.
“Wrigley deserved it 1000 percent,” she said. “I felt Wrigley deserved 1000 percent. Wrigley was by far our go-to player. She was very deserving of first team, she’s a good athlete, she has a good head on her shoulders. She’s very unselfish when it comes to the game of basketball and she puts her team first. She led our team in rebounds and points. She was our leading scorer and most effective rebounder, and so she deserved it.”
Floyd was the long-range shooter and was the 3-point and steals leader.
“She came in clutch for a lot of games,” Payten said. “She was good for about two or three of them a game and most of them came in very clutch times in our games. I think she had 45 steals in district alone.”
Allen made the most of her final year in the program, the coach said.
“Peyton did a good job,” she said. “She led us on the court, more than her athleticism and her skill in basketball. The kids surrounded her, they like her and they listen to her. She’s an effective leader on the court.”
Cullison returned to the sport after a two-year absence.
“I think if Sarah had been right beside Wrigley, she would have dominated,” the coach said. “She was very raw, but she gave me everything she had each and every game. She could steal the ball, she could rebound, she could jump out of the gym. She was skilled at shooting and by the end of the season, she could make a 3-pointer, she could make a little jumper and her defense was very good.”
Rowyn Mulhollan served as the team’s Swiss Army knife.
“Rowyn was put in a tough situation, especially in the very beginning when we didn’t know if we would have any volleyball players,” Payten said. “She was fixing to step into a role that had we not had those volleyball players I think it would have killed her confidence. I’m so glad that we did have them for our first game. It was ugly, but we had them. (That) relieved a little bit off of Rowan. She played every position – I could put her anywhere. She could play any position and know what to do. You don’t come across that many times.”
Those four plus Grace Cullison, Landri Lewis, Haylie McIntyre, Chloe Nygard, Marisa Porter and Lezlee Rhoder were named academic all-district.
